Ayurveda and Piles (Haemorrhoids)

Piles or Arsha is caused by a faulty diet and sedentary lifestyle which lead to the vitiation (impairment) of all three doshas, and predominantly Vata (air). Vitiated Vata causes low digestive fire, leading to persistent constipation. Accumulation of waste products in the body and varicose veins in the rectum also contribute to the development of haemorrhoids .

The ultimate goal in Ayurveda is to balance each dosha. This is done through a combination of diet, lifestyle modifications, and herbal remedies. Haemorrhoids are swollen veins found in and around the anus and rectum. They can be either internal or external. Some symptoms of haemorrhoids (or piles) include:
  • Intense itching around the anus
  • Painful or itchy swelling or lump near your anus
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Bleeding from your anus during or after bowel movements
  • Irritation and pain around the anus
  • Leakage of stool
Some factors which help in
development of piles are Constipation, controlling nature calls, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, less intake of fibre-rich foods, too much intake of meat and fish, and spicy and heavy foods.
While patients seem to ignore this condition, it is always advised to consult the doctor at the right time so that the treatment provided can be effective.
Most of the patients, out of sheer embarrassment try to hide this condition,
however  the moment you figure out you have the symptoms, its good to consult the doctor. Most patients try either home remedies or try to supress the situation, thus delaying the chances of quick treatment and recovery.
It’s important to know for sure you have haemorrhoids, so do seek a diagnosis with your Ayurvedic Doctor to rule out other problems. Your Doctor may recommend over-the-counter products for this issue. Serious haemorrhoids will require more treatment.
There are a handful of Ayurvedic approaches to treating haemorrhoids you could be recommended.
Treatments for haemorrhoids in Ayurveda are:
  • Medication, or bhaishajya chikitsa
  • Herbal application, or kshara
  • Surgical intervention, or sastra chikitsa
  • Cauterization, or agnikarma
If treated early then the choice of Ayurvedic treatment will usually be Kshara Karma along with medicines which is quite effective. In the more serious stages; Ksharsutra ligation is the treatment of choice. Ksharsutra ligation is a highly specific and curative treatment for haemorrhoids. In this therapy; the Pile masses are ligated by Ksharsutra under local anaesthesia. Pile mass shrinks and detaches in a week or 10 days. There is no bleeding, no hospitalization and no bed rest required. Patient can continue his normal routine activities as usual.
The takeaway:
Ayurvedic haemorrhoid treatments are safe and effective. Based on individualized diagnosis, if necessary Amulya Ayurveda Doctor will recommend Kshar Sutra therapy at this stage. Kshar Sutra Therapy is a safe, sure and cost-effective treatment for piles and requires minimal surgical invasion, no hospitalisation and reduces chances of recurrence. For most people, Ayurveda alone will do the trick when treatment is given early.
