An accumulation of excess fat in our body lead to Obesity, which may have negative effects on health. It can reduce life expectancy and can cause other health problems. A study suggest that obesity has increased by two-fold in last three decades globally. Earlier, obesity was a lifestyle problem, but now World Health Organization have classified it as a disease.
In Ayurveda, Atisthaulya (Obesity) is described as excessive accumulation of Meda (fat/adipose tissue) and Mamsa (flesh/muscle tissue) leading to flabbiness of hips, abdomen, and breast. It is one of Santarpanottha Vikaras (disease due to consumption of excessive calories) according to ayurveda. More emphasis on balanced state of Body tissues is definition of health in Ayurveda. So in Ayurveda, Obesity is a condition in which Medodhatu (Fatty Tissue) is in a state of VikritaVriddhi (Abnormal increase). Causative factors for Obesity:
- Change in diet coupled with increasing inactive lifestyle.
- Consumption of fats and every dense food with a concurrent reduction in physical activity.
- Today more and more jobs are becoming sedentary and dietary patterns are also changing with a decline in real nutrition intake.
- Genetics, endocrine disorders, Medical Reasons or Psychiatric illness can cause obesity.
According to Ayurveda obesity begins with imbalance of doshas (Vata, Pita, and Kapha), an imbalance of agni (digestive fire), an imbalance of the malas (waste products) or an imbalance of shrotas (microcirculatory channels). This collection of imbalances then interferes with the formation of tissues or dhatus and leads to a tissue imbalance that we experience as excess weight.
We at Amulya Health, believe our lifestyle and diet choices disrupt balance. We view weight imbalance and obesity as something that should be corrected before it can contribute to other health problem. So, to restore this balance, the Ayurvedic expert at our clinic determines the unique nature of the individual (Prakriti) and the nature of imbalance (Vikriti). The essence of recommendation is generally coming down to addressing a few core issues: strengthening digestion (balance agni), removing ama, Diet control by avoiding kapha aggravating food stuff, improving dietary habits, adjusting inappropriate daily routines and treatment focusing on cleaning fat channels using herbal cleansers.
